How to Run an A/B Test on a Small Business Website

In this short walkthrough, we use FreeCROTool to improve a coffee shop website by making the reservation option easier to find, then prepare the test for measurement.

No coding. No complicated setup. Just a practical example of how a small website change can be tested properly.

Watch the Demo

This video shows a real example of creating an A/B test using a demo coffee shop website.

The Problem

The coffee shop website already had a reservation page, but the link was hidden inside a dropdown menu. Visitors could easily miss it, especially on mobile or when quickly scanning the page.

That makes it a good candidate for a simple conversion test: what happens if reservations are promoted more clearly near the top of the page?

The Test Idea

The test creates a new version of the page where the reservation message is made more visible in the hero area. Instead of relying on visitors finding the menu item, the page gives them a clearer prompt much earlier.

1. Create a Variant

Start with the original page, then create a second version that can be edited visually.

2. Edit the Page Visually

Add or change the hero content so the reservation message is easier for visitors to notice.

3. Publish for QA

Preview and quality-check the test before sending real visitors into the experiment.

Why This Matters

Many small business websites already have the right pages, offers, or contact options, but they are not always easy enough to find. A/B testing helps you check whether making something more visible actually improves behaviour.

Rather than guessing, you can test the change and measure the result.
